GROWING UP

Growing Up is the title of the Frisco High School's 2021-2022 Yearbook. Growing Up symbolizes what it means to progress through one's high school years in 2021 and 2022 all while being a uniquely developed book that embraces the changes students go through during a highly digital, post-COVID-19, rapidly changing time.

The Challenge:

To create a unique book that represents as well as includes all students while highlighting the unique notability of the 2021-2022 school year.

The Solution

The idea behind the concept "Growing Up" is to encompass the drastic changes students were required to go to in order to adjust to the changes in society from the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The theme "Growing Up" also casts a light on what seems to be the never-ending high speed changes high schoolers go through from changes in trends and switching electives to discovering parts of themselves from freshman to senior year. Growing Up not only highlights these important changes but also embraces them in order for students to feel seen and heard at Frisco High School.

Planning

When first deciding on a theme to the year's book, many things were highlighted as to what would make the new year different from the rest. This included the ridding of mandatory mask usage in school, a surprisingly strong football team for the first time in years, as well as the re-introduction of all sports to return back to normal. Many themes were designed as an initial mock up such as the theme "The Flip Side" along with several layouts to accompany the designs. However, as the theme of 'growth' came about, the designs shifted from being less sophisticated and more creative and free.

Information Architecture Research

Several hours of research goes into the designing of a yearbook, specifically in regards to information architecture. The layouts of the book are crucial to the readability, usability, and functionality of the book while also playing a key role in merging the theme of the book throughout. Many of the research done on information architecture for the construction of this book was done through viewing magazines on Issuu.com, searching through physical magazines, looking through the layouts of previous yearbooks from the school and other schools, as well as noting features of different applications such as a typeface choice or a specific usage of white space in an app.

Developing Layouts

Once having the theme solidified and gathering relevant inspiration, the designs of the book began to form easily as they both seamlessly incorporated the theme while being easy to read and easy to spot students in.

Final Design

With the various changes made throughout, Growing Up successfully became a unique book to the students of 2021-2022 and left its mark as a genuine book that connected to all students and their changing journeys through high school.
