This week in ISM was relatively similar to the past few weeks: working on my Google UX Certification, updating my websites with assessments and blogs, researching new articles on UX and how I can improve, etc. One thing that did make this week different, though, was a unique offer that I received from a UX hirer.
This past Sunday, a friend of my parent’s had came over to visit. One topic we discussed while over was his new job. This particular friend, Javier Lopez, had recently gotten a position as a hirer for UX designers for a local video game company. When I told Javier of my position as an entry-level UX designer as well as how UX is the career I plan to pursue, he offered to get me connected with a UX employer at his company. Unfortunately, he and I had not had much time to discuss the offer further, though I plan on reaching out to him within the next couple of days and explain my quest for a mentor. Although this offer is within the video game industry, which is not the industry I initially had in mind, I feel I can gain a lot of experience through this position because I can finally have hands-on experience as to how UX works in a professional setting. I may also begin to get a feel for what parts of UX I am interested in the most, how the process to creating gaming content differs from apps, websites, or other UX, or I may even consider a career shift from being a UX designer for apps to being a designer in the gaming industry.
Aside from the offer, I have begun brainstorming as to what my Original Work idea will be. As of right now, I am considering creating a general wireframe for a shopping app. It will be very simple and I will create the design through either Adobe XD or Figma. I have a lot of ideas as to how the app will look and feel, but I first need to figure out how to navigate through Adobe XD and/or Figma first.
For the rest of the week in ISM, I will continue to work towards my certification, I will reach out to Javier about the opportunity he offered me, and I will familiarize myself with either Adobe XD or Figma. I am so excited to finally be getting physically involved with UX and cannot wait to see what these new opportunities have to offer.
