#19: Looking the ‘Art’

One thing that I have been studying throughout the entire process of creating my app design is art. I have been paying particular attention to artwork when designing not only for design inspiration, but also for implementing some artwork into my app.

When I first started planning out the designs that I wanted at the beginning of the year, one app that I got a lot of inspiration from was Loona. Loona is a storytelling app meant for users who have sleeping problems. The idea behind it is an “adult version” of bedtime stories typically told to children and that the stories told through Loona allow for adults to fall asleep as they did when they were younger. The app became a success very quickly and one of the main reasons for it was the artwork. The app contains very colorful yet dull 3D animated designs that are soothing and almost entrancing to look at. I gained a lot of inspiration from Loona for the app I am creating, although the art was never my main priority when designing given that I am focusing more on the efficiency and usability of the application before anything else. However, now that I am in a state where the technicalities are, for the most part, simple to understand I am now putting more focus on the art of the app.

For the artwork, I knew what kind of style I wanted for the longest time and decided to reach out to a friend of mine, Aniah Vincent, for the production of the art. Aniah is experienced in digital art, specifically 2D art, although I knew that she would be okay with a challenge and would love to contribute to the application. Right now, Aniah is working on some of the designs that I sent her which are navigation icons, meditation icons, and gaming icons. Hopefully, by next blog, I will be able to test out which icons match with what and am excited to see how I can implement the art in ways that I haven’t thought of.
