#9: Making Changes

I am deciding on changing my Original Work...again. Over the past few days, I have been reviewing plans for my Original Work. After much analysis and realistic thinking, I concluded that it was probably too ambitious of me to think of creating an entire video game within the span of a single semester. Granted, the original plan was to create the game characteristics minus the coding of the game, however, I have decided that there will not be many other opportunities for me to design a fully-functioning video game so I might as well go all out now. Given that I do not have much experience with coding, though, I have decided to not completely change the plans I have for my Original Work but to alter it to better suit my skill set and current knowledge.

Ideally, I would like to create a fully completed and functioning videogame by the end of the school year; meaning that the game will coincide with my Final Product as well. And in order for me to accomplish this goal, I have to decrease the amount of complex features which I have initially set for the game. Instead of having a first-person pov, console compatible shooter game as I initially and boldly had in mind, I have decided to change the game to one which answers these three questions:

  • What problem do people have that I could solve?

  • How will this app make people’s lives easier?

  • How can I make a highly efficient, user friendly, and useful app with a limited skill set and a limited amount of time?

After much contemplation, self-analysis, and research gathered from peers and family, I have decided to create a simple stress-relieving video game. I have settled on creating this type of video game through reflecting on my past experiences with gaming and have recalled that the majority of such experiences were rather quite stressful. I am also a very busy person in general and tend to get stressed easily yet have not found an ideal way to relieve such stress. I want this videogame to be an app with its sole purpose to be stress-relief. I plan for it to have a repetitive game within the app such as stacking objects, watering digital plants, or painting, for instance, and also have separate tabs for reading, links to meditation practices, a section for journaling, and daily inspirational quotes. I felt this app would be perfect as there is no true multi-functional app within the Apple App Store which offers multiple stress-relieving activities, the app would be relatively simple to design, it offers aid and stability to users, and it is based off of an idea that is special to me.

In order to pursue the goal of creating this fully-functioning videogame, I have recently reached out to Mason Dierkes; a self-taught video game designer and app creator who is an ISM student like I am. I plan to meet with Mason to discuss what exactly goes into creating an app and what I will need to know in order for me to set my deadline timeline accordingly.

With this new plan in mind, I have decided to halt my creation process until meeting with Mason (which will be within the next few days) but will continue to grow my knowledge in UX through putting in extra hours towards my Google UX courses. I will also be looking through many of the resources that Ms. Kristen Kirk graciously gave me and will see if there are any design tips to notate for this project. I will also sketch a rough draft of how I want the game to look like, function, and what features I want it to have in preparation for the upcoming meeting I have with Mason. I am incredibly excited for this new shift in progress and hope to get rolling with this new idea as soon as I can.
