Today, Jenny Sun and I met up at our regular boba spot to discuss an incredibly important subject: ISM mentorship.
In the next step to my independent study, I am required to obtain a mentor - typically a professional who I will work with at least once a week to discuss and experience my chosen topic in a hands-on and open working environment. Out of the several people that I have interviewed with so far, I recently decided that Jenny Sun, or Jenny, is the best person to be my mentor given that I am the most comfortable around her and she has the most experience out of anybody I have reached out to.
Long story short, she agreed to be my mentor and we discussed what being my mentor would entail, mentorship as a whole, and I invited her to my Research Showcase in two weeks! Along with discussing her becoming my mentor, I introduced her to my app designs and asked for her feedback on it to which she provided me with helpful compliments yet also things to improve upon. One of the things that I really like about Jenny is that she is helpful, non-judgemental, easy to talk to, and is willing to help me learn. Her willingness to help educate me was especially prominent today as she taught me many new things in relation to designing, working with others, she told me examples of the types of managements she has worked with and how my experiences with managers will be different depending on the companies, she taught me design and IT terminology that I had never heard of before, and she even provided me with tools that will assist me in the design process.
Today was a very special day in my journey as a designer and I am incredibly happy and grateful that I got to meet someone like Jenny who is willing to help me out. As our partnership begins, I plan to keep myself better accountable with my app as she will also be assisting me with it and I am curious as to how I will gain a hands-on approach to designing from her given that her job revolves around designing and meeting with clients entirely virtually. Overall, I am super excited to have Jenny as my mentor and cannot wait to interact with her more, learn more, and to work on my designs with her.
