“The certificate.” It’s a phrase that, if we’re close enough, you will hear me discussing almost too often. From “One second, I’m working on the certificate,” to “Oh I need to work on the certificate today,” the word “certificate” is becoming a part of my regular vocabulary more and more by the day. When in ISM, chances are you will find me working on one of two things: ISM work or the Google UX Design Certificate. More specifically, a six month long course by Google which will earn me a UX Design Certificate; a certificate that provides me equivalent to a year’s worth of design experience.
In this past week in ISM, I have been focusing more of my attention towards the certificate as I am in the process of ingraining my hour of “certificate work” into my everyday routine. The courses that I take to earn this certification are composed of months of articles, videos, quizzes, tests, discussion boards, glossaries, and interactive practice sessions split into various weeks. On Thursday, I received a glossary which held all of the new UX Design terminology that I had learned from the week’s work. This UX Design based glossary is what I based my first assessment over.
Among the several projects that are a part of the ISM coursework, assessments are the most crucial of them all. Assessments are essentially an evaluation of research on each student’s given topic. They are some of the most crucial to submit as they are ultimately a way for students to learn more about their given topic and to gain a better understanding of why they want to pursue a career in their chosen field. I chose to write my assessment over the glossary as it encompassed everything new that I had learned from that week’s certificate work. This included different types of UX Designers, specialists vs generalists, characteristics of a good user experience, the product development lifecycle, and what kinds of UX Design jobs companies are hiring for.
I am proud that I was able to make as much progress on the certificate this week as I did, though I am struggling on finding a set time out of my day to routinely work on it. I will continue to experiment on these times though as of right now, do not be surprised if you catch me reading a primary color themed article or watching an incredibly modernesque video during ISM. As for my first assessment, I was not completely satisfied with my work, so next week I plan on researching something completely new about my topic. Ultimately, I am content with my progress for this week, but am striving to complete much more by the next blog post.
